Essay

Network management cannot be achieved without measurement of network performance. For that purpose, NMS is recommended. NMS will provide constant monitoring of computer network including identification of slow or failing systems or nodes. Moreover, bandwidth congestion, abnormal broadcasting will also be identified (Network monitoring.2007). Moreover, for system monitoring, event viewer, logs, counters and alerts, Nagios is recommended. However, many tools are available in the market. For instance, Solar winds NMS is also a network monitoring tool that will report issues related to network nodes along with alert generation but is not valuable for a small network, as it is best suited for corporate networks (SolarWinds: Network management software & network monitoring, n.d ). Nagios will provide all on one solution and will also align with organizational goals and objectives. It is defined as “Nagios is a powerful monitoring system that enables organizations to identify and resolve IT infrastructure problems before they affect critical business processes”. Furthermore, the tools will also provide powerful API scripts that will facilitate easy monitoring of systems, as well as applications that are functional within the network (Nagios – nagios features, n.d). Likewise, issues that are reported occasionally are related to slow network performance, slow Internet service and print / file sharing issues. If an issue related to slow network performance is reported, network engineer will initially review the alerts and performance logs for detecting the root cause. Secondly, the tool will also provide status of nodes along with its bandwidth consumption, if any node is detected as a high traffic generator or broadcasting high traffic, that node is considered to be affected by a virus or malicious code and therefore, will be removed from the network. Moreover, for slow browsing issues, the tool will identify bandwidth congestion on a WAN interface and hence, indicating issue residing on the ISP. Thirdly, file and print sharing issues will be identified by reviewing the network connectivity status of the affected workstation.
