Relating to the performance and the film “Fences,” I concur that the immense existence of the character Troy Maxson inclines to overshadow the other characters. In my judgment, Rose is the personality to be flouted and not Troy Maxson. About Troy’s actions, he designates just how he dominates the people close to him. In defense of my conventions from the film, it is evident how Rose dedicated her life to Troy, but he eventually disappoints her. Rose forgot to love herself before committing all her love to Troy; she does not follow her dreams as she believed that her future with Troy would result in something positive.
“Don’t you think I ever desired other things?” Rose explains (Movieclips 5). For the past eighteen years of Rose’s life has been standing with Troy that she did not even consider to make her life better; she always thought of her dreams to be with Troy. Rose explains to Troy how she neglected to chase her dreams and hopes to make him happy. Additionally, Rose always stayed as she had the sensation that Troy was her responsibility, and the thoughts of leaving him to start a new life somewhere else made her think that she would be making a mistake and neglecting her duties. She holds on to Troy as she expected that he could make her happy, but rather Troy proves to be self-centered. He only thinks of his wants and needs, and he cheats on Rose with Alberta and is confident that Rose would not find out about it.” You are not the only one who got wants,” Rose says (Movieclips 5). From both the film and play, it is evident how Rose dedicates her life to Troy as she loved him wholeheartedly with all her feelings; furthermore, she inattentions to her wants and needs for the reasons that both she and Troy are happy. Rose had placed the fate of her life onto Tony, and Rose waited with much patience that everything would work out as Rose expected but only comes to realize eighteen years later that her efforts were vain. Even though Troy never showed concern for her welfare, she still holds on to him as her husband.
Rose further claims to owe everything she had to Troy. It indicates that even though he was not caring about her, she was still grateful to him. “I had to try to erase now that you are the finest man,” Rose claimed (Movieclips 5). But at this juncture, she was trying to convince herself that Troy was amongst the finest men in the world; she had given up on everything and lost her hope in Troy. She was willing to be with Troy in every situation they encountered, she had the affection of a wife to him, and Rose treated him with respect as her husband, and she even thought of Troy as her only way to survive was to become his wife. Troy is a selfish man, and he only considers what he has done and not what other people have been doing, like Rose to help him out.
Moreover, Troy was regarded and respected in the social world with his family as the center of attraction, but he changes to a lonely, fearful and unloved person. He constantly tries not to face the realities in his life, and he tries to challenge death as he depicts the character of being overconfident in his persuasions and himself. Troy confronts his employees about their biased exercises; additionally, Troy shows off to Bono, his friend, and his family members how he is not frightened of death. Moreover, he shows he is secretive, and he is confident that he could get off scot-free about his affair with Alberta.
Respect is something that is earned and not demanded. However, Troy requires respect from his son Cory, something that he did not deserve. Moreover, Troy feels superior and noble after he teases his son Lyon. Furthermore, a sudden occurrence of events drives Troy hastily into loneliness as his secrets, his uncontrolled anger, and unkind life got the better part of him. His loved ones were forced to lose their respect for him, and eventually, they had to adapt to living without depending on his presence. His role of being a devoted and loving husband to Rose, a responsible parent, and an inspiring forerunner to his friends are forfeited.
In conclusion, the towering of Troy tends to dwarf other characters in Fences, however, the play belongs to Rose. Based on the facts that Troy’s life is a failure, he is regarded as a selfish and weak person. He exhibits selfish acts in numerous ways. For instance, he is unfaithful to Rose, and he even fathered his mistress Alberta with a child. He exhibits egocentricity as he justifies his unfaithfulness because he is the family’s breadwinner and deserves to cheat on his wife. Additionally, he does not get along and relate with his son, and he is egocentric for the failure to understand his son’s life. He prevents his son from playing football as he thinks that his son will turn out to be better than him, and also, for a reason, he was denied a chance to play professional football. He also denies his son the opportunity. Troy was a good baseball player even though Troy was just near making it out as a professional baseball player, and his chance got blocked. Moreover, Troys acts of egocentrism might be attributed to how he was brought up. His father was strict with him that he did not want him to be in a relationship with a girl he admired and even disciplined him severally that even at one time he beat him with leather reins. He thinks that his father is angry for his disobedience, that he left home to go and fend for himself in the streets. Somehow, Troy doubted himself and caused his hardships and disappointing life while providing for himself and the family. He acts selfishly for failure to take responsibility for his friends and family. Troy left his father’s house to fend for himself with no resources to begin with, which ended him up in jail for committing petty crimes to survive. Troy was unable to fend for his family, and it pushed him to become an employee in a sanitation company where he worked for many years without being promoted for racial discrimination in the hiring union’s exercises attributes to his failure. Ignorance is no defense. Troy is ignorant and selfish when he sent Gabe to a psychological rest home, and he affected the resolution to cast off Gabe out of ignorance because he was not conversant with reading, but he autographed the documents. More also, he ought not to validate his conduct, and his confidences and transgressions overpowered him. Troys conduct and character depict him as a tragic hero.
