Types of Non -Verbal Communications, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 304

Essay

Modes of dress or other types of non -verbal communications may interfere with the operation of a prison. Even though non -verbal communications are allowed in the first amendment, there is limitation in prisons for security reasons. Over the years, United States has come up with favorable laws to ensure that prisoners get their rights. They have freedom of expression and communication but their words are monitored by the correctional officials. Prisoners are allowed to write mails to their loved ones and express their feelings in pictorial forms but they are denied their privacy since the correctional officials must read them to ensure that there is no plan for escape. But some pictures presented in the mails can affect the operation of a prison since images may be used to mock some prison official or criticize the state authorities. This may prompt punishment and investigations in the prison. For example, a prisoner may picture and send a photo showing the brutality of the prison staff to his/her family members which may raise concerns.

The mode of dressing as stated in the first amendment as a harmless form of non-verbal communication may not adversely affect a prison since the inmates wear similar clothes. But inmates may put some writings that criticize the authorities on their clothes. This form of non-verbal communication cannot be tolerated since it is incisive to prisons and may cause resilience in the prison. Symbolic wears other than the clothes can be used to pass a message in the prisons which can cause commotion. For example, coveringthe mouth with a piece of cloth or a masking tape before the authorities might mean oppression by the prison officials. Therefore, it can be evident that non- verbal forms of communication have got limits in the prisons and may disrupt prison operations if they are not addressed appropriately.
