Selective response

This is a situation in which an individual exhibits a behavior associated with isolation or lack of openness. This type of response is where the individual or person does not feel free to talk about death and how they feel about the topic of death. The social anxiety associated with this type of response causes the individual to be afraid of sharing their personal feelings.

Compartmentalizing

In this type of response situation, an individual is often aware of their life being in a life threatening situation but ignores certain aspects of it.  The person resists putting together the entire bits associated with their realization and acknowledgement of death.

Resistance

This type of response represents the reaction an individual has towards the threat of death. In this case, one would decide to either ignore the reality of the impending jeopardy. In certain circumstances people who are in stressful situations may be aware of its danger but decide not to ‘give in’ to it.

Deception

Individuals tend to deliberately give false information to others. This normally occurs during the confusion of a death-related situation. This defensive approach to lying (for whatever purpose) makes sense in acknowledging this deceptive action can lead to psychotic reactions against recognizing death-laden reality.
