Ukraine Crisis Recent Developments, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 275

Essay

The purpose of the paper and research of media coverage is to find how different the reports about the separatist process of the province of Donetsk in Ukraine were in different newspapers and TV channels. During 2014, pro-Russian separatists fought against Ukrainian military to achieve independence for the region. While ceasefire was officially arranged later in the year, it was broken by both sides. The “Donetsk People’s Republic” was created, and elections were held on the 3rd of November. All countries, apart from Russia claim that the election were illegitimate. The issue has a great importance for international politics, and economy. It can define the future security plans of NATO, and countries’ response determines the world’s opinion on the issue. The author would like to review the publications of four different mediums: BBC News, NBC News, Euronews, and The Moscow Times. The analysis will attempt to answer the following questions:

  1. Which issues were addressed related to the Ukrainian crisis by the medium
  2. Was anything omitted from the reports?
  3. Were the reports balanced, or one-sided?
  4. Do reports provide potential explanation for the event, or do they simply state facts?

The crisis of Ukraine is viewed from a different perspective in every region. For the former Eastern bloc countries, it can mean the manifestation of Russian aggression that was present in the region during the Cold War. For Americans, the conflict might mean a threat of power balance, and regional stability. For NATO leaders, it creates a challenge to create defense military strategies should the problems escalate further. For European economies, unrest in the region would result in loss of trade profits, and potential disturbance in energy supplies (from Russia through Ukraine).
