Haute Cuisine: Should We Eat It or Admire It?

Ah, the French! Leave it to them to produce art that is edible. I am dining at one of my favorite restaurants. He waiter has just placed a lovely Caille en sarcophage fois gras (quail in a “coffin”- pastry shell- with truffle sauce) before me (Goss, 2010). This three dimensional food-art is the product of the skilled hand of a master chef. Its presentation, lying beautifully brown against a plate of white represents balance and blend –the eye is pleased even before the palate is satiated. Just enough of the plate is showing, at irregular intervals, to suggest that the bird is swimming in its elixir of gravy. This is representational art at its tastiest. The artist (chef) wants our senses of taste and smell to be excited. I will now take my first bite —the senses are pleased.

Could Someone Hand Me My Wrap? Art as Clothing

The subject is a still from a video, Out of the Box. The model is clothed only in packing tape, which encircles her entire body. This is a performance of art in real time. The tape is arranged so that the model’s skin shows from around each of its orbits across her body. Her face contains a blank stare so as not to compete for attention to the tape as it does its work on her. The color of the tape is white. The content is that of a woman seeking to express herself, even though she is bound my social expectations and sex roles. This is symbolic of anyone who wants to break free. It sends the encouraging message that you do not have to wait until all of the things that beset you move from your path. The model confronts you with the innocent truth that she wants to be understood.
