United States Intervention to Different Countries, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 268

Essay

In his book Parenti discusses United States intervention to different countries of the world, including the countries of Asia, Europe, and Central America. However, the original reason for the intrusion has never been revealed to the public. United States intelligent agencies, like CIA in particular, put thousands of Nazi war criminals on the U.S. payroll, and utilized them in repressive operation against the left movements in Latin America.(Parenti, 150) Parenti suggests that CIA involvement in Central America contributed to the U.S. cocaine epidemic of 1980s. It appears that the primary goal of CIA intervention to Central America was not a communist threat of Sandinista government and the Guatemalan and Salvadoran insurgencies, but special interest in drug trafficking. “CIA planes guns and supplies down to right-wing mercenary troops in Nicragua – the ‘Contras’ – and procapitalist political and military leaders in other Latin countries.”(Parenti, 151) Consequently, on their way back to the U.S. the planes were filled with cocaine. Even thought CIA did not admit being involved in drug trafficking, it admitted that they knew about narcotic shipments, but did nothing about it. That was a very smart tactics, in terms of implementing social and political control in the countries of Central America. By permitting the drug turnover in these countries, CIA low-income African American and Latino youths shooting themselves up with needles and each other with guns, instead of organizing military revolutionary groups and movements as in 1960s.(Parenti, 151) Therefore, the cocaine epidemic of 1980s was best time for United States to suppress revolutionary movements in the countries of Central America.
