United Student World Assembly (USWA)

General

The United Student World Assembly (USWA) is a group that was formed in order to represent students worldwide. The organization provides meetings across the globe so that students can promote their ideas and vote on current world issues that are affecting them.

Mission

The mission of the USWA is to promote democracy in students around the world. The goal is to have a sound understanding between students at various world-wide institutions. In addition, the USWA promotes equality and strives from international participation.

Organization Structure

The structure of USWA is divided into different sections. The upper section is composed of the board of directors. The board of directors is responsible for organizing and managing activities and meetings for the USWA. The board of directors votes on the various issues prompted by all students. The board is also responsible for choosing an executive director. The structure also includes a board of advisors who offer advice to the board of directors. The USWA also elects staff at the various locations worldwide. The executive director is in charge of managing staff members worldwide. The staff has both salaried employees and volunteers. The activities and meetings that are held through the USWA are also offered online for individuals to participate and share their ideas. There are discussion forums posted on the USWA website.

Location for Meetings

The location for the USWA has been chosen to be held in the United States Capital City, Washington D.C at Georgetown University. The meetings will be held biannually. For those who cannot travel, the discussions will be held live via the internet.

Rules

The USWA has implemented the following rules to decision making on issues. Any issue must have a typed, written proposal submitted one month prior to the USWA meeting. The proposal should contain a thesis statement, questions that should arise in the meeting, literature cited, and support from a University.

Only two issues will be brought to each of the biannual meetings. Therefore, the proposals submitted will be chosen by the board of directors though a voting process. The most votes received by a proposal will be brought to the meeting.

At the biannual meeting, the issues elected by the board will be discussed and voted upon by all members of the USWA. There will be online voting permitted for those that did not attend the meeting, via internet. The issue must receive a 90% approval by all of the members in order for the issue to be implemented.

Discussion of Major Issue for USWA

One of the major issues for the USWA is conservation and the environment. Conservation of the environment is necessary for the future generations. The USWA has prompted important issues in order to help conserve our planet. One particular issue is non-renewable resources. Non-renewable resources are natural resources that cannot be manually produced at the same rate it is consumed. Examples of non-renewable resources are coal, natural gas and petroleum.

The goal of the USWA is to educate the youth of the scientific principles and understanding of conservation. The USWA wants students to recognize how the environment is impacted through human activities and change their own habits. The USWA is for a “Greener” way of living. The USWA also wants the members to participate in changing policies in regard to environmental conservation, such as greenhouse gases, global warming and waste disposal of chemicals. All of these issues can have both an effect on the environment, as well as the health of organisms living in the environment.
