Essay

I am interested in a science degree with concentrations in the Medical field.  Initially I wish to gain a strong foundation in my undergraduate education that will enable me to pursue a career in the medical field.   The University of Michigan is noted to have one of the best Medical Schools in the country.  ( See Fig 1 ). In addition the Ann Arbor school at U of M is rated to have an excellent teaching faculty with excellent tenured professors in the Medical field.  This is evidenced by the “hands on” experience that students obtain by combing practical work experience with the theoretical learning components within the schools degree curriculum.   One such example being that of the ‘Clerkship Education Program’  which provides third and fourth year medical students with a wider range of electives and clinical experience.

In addition U of M offers the ability to undertake dual degree programs by combing that of a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) with that of a Masters in Public Health, Science Information,  Art or Science in clinical research.  This option of flexibility is extremely attractive and offers greater career flexibility.  In addition through the Ross School of Business there is the opportunity of taking the combined M.D./Ph.D. Medical Scientist training program; although taking 7-8 years to complete this offers one of the most in depth and comprehensive post graduate study programs in the country.

From a research perspective the University has in excess of 60 centres and offers a diverse range of programmes offering flexibility in study options. This is also supported by an active alumni and student association with in excess of 20 different student associations that you can participate in.  The buildings and infrastructure of the Medical Centre Campus are amongst the best in the USA and are highly ranked.  The town also has an active and vibrant community centre and students are welcomed to participate in many different forms of community events that help in the provision of community services.  This includes summer camps for students and provides an informal way of making new friends and acquaintances whilst experiencing the more formal rigors of University life.

The School also has attractive Halls of Residence and study facilities enabling students to meet peer groups and often gain lifelong friends.  This helps in improving social skills and gaining study companions that can form a part of your academic network.  This often later transcends into working life and the formation of your business and professional network.

The University of Michigan has an impressive track record in rankings and recognition of being amongst the best Medical Schools in the USA.

  • Gained numerous recognition and honours for research conducted at the school including leading edge bio-medical research
  • Maintained consistent level of honours over the last 17 years
  • Rated amongst the best hospitals in a wide range of disciplines
  • Recognised in 1986 as being one of the top hospitals for patient centred care
  • The School has an annual research budget in excess of $333 million.
