Violence in the Workplace, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 313

Essay

Research has shown that there have been violence acts in the workplace over the past. These violent acts include homicides, beatings, robberies and sexual assaults. Most of the workplace homicides result from robberies and related crimes. This violence has sobering consequences for both individuals and the company. It is thus the responsibility of the employer to prevent such violence by providing a safe and healthful working environment (Gustin 1947 p. 174).

The main strategy that ought to be carried out in the prevention of violence in the workplace is training of employees. It emphasizes the commitment of management on the employee’s safety in the efforts of developing and implementing a company’s disaster prevention plan. The pro-active approach of the training programs aims at offering solutions to reported cases of intimidations, threats and harassment. The employees should be informed of the necessity of reporting incidents, the role and commitment of management in taking the reported incidences seriously through the training programs.

It should also emphasize on giving knowledge on the procedures to be taken when reporting the violence, intimidations, threats and other disruptive behaviors, and the importance of having contacts of the appropriate person to whom they should report to whenever an emergency or a crisis occurs. According to Gustin (1947), other topics which should be included in the training are management of anger, company workplace violence policy, prevention and diffusion of aggressive behavior in the workplace, stress management, security procedures as well as techniques and skills in resolving conflicts.

In conclusion, training programs for employees prepares them with adequate knowledge and skills on how they should handle threats,   no matter how they may seem to be. The prompt response that should be taken when a violent act arises is to report to the management for a necessary action.
