Vital Speech of the Day, Essay Example

The eloquent speech by Mahmud Bey Muntasser of Libya was delivered at the Asian-African Conference in Indonesia in 1955.  The introduction of the speech effectively appealed to the audience by not only stating the purpose of the conference, but Muntasser also attempted to appeal to the emotions of the conference members by stating the importance of coming together for the ideals of every Asian-African nation.  The purpose of the speech is to introduce the conference to the purpose of all nations coming together to deliberate on how each could work together to achieve independence after World War II.  Muntasser expressed three main ideas that have forced the conference of nations to work together to eliminate the problems that have restricted independence and sovereignty, which are a history of colonialism, racial discrimination and external ideological interference.  In order for all of the nations to achieve independence and establish a sovereign government, the conference must work together to eliminate these three issues from each culture.

The speech is organized in a manner that directly introduces each of these restricting factors to the conference in order.  Through this organization, the speaker includes the problems of Palestine as an emotional ploy to influence each individual nation to take these three issues very seriously due to the extent of the damage that each has forced upon every nation.  These emotional ploys are the key sources of supporting material that Muntasser used during the speech; however, he also used historical events that each nation was aware of or should have been aware in order to emphasize the importance of each of the three restricting factors.  In conclusion, the speaker mentions that the ideals of peace, independence and economic prosperity are critical for every nation.  Finally, he emphasizes that the Libyan representatives will speak freely and constructively about these factors in order to achieve the appropriate ideals that each nation desired in attending the conference.  The speaker uses emotional ploys effectively to reach out to the members of the conference.  He is able to draw them in through historical references that all conference nations could relate to.  Every statement was well-worded and easy to follow, which was important given the multitude of nations attending the conference.
