Vocational Maturity Development, Essay Example

Essay

My career goal is to become a social worker. Although I am not currently certain whether I would want to specialize or become a generalist, I believe that my psychiatric rehabilitation and psychology degree will allow me to explore my professional options, which will contribute to my ability to make this decision. When I first entered college, I was not certain what career path I would follow. However, I have a strong drive to help others in my community, so I believe that entering the field of social work is the best possible fit for me. I also believe that entering this field will help me grow through experience, which will allow me to further refine my career goals after entering the field.

Currently, I am taking classes that are helping me to develop a basic foundation of the sociology and psychology knowledge that I will need to be a more effective practitioner. Gaining a deeper understanding of the brain in addition to studying the diverse social experiences that members of the public undergo is an important component of my vocational development. As the difficulty of my classes increase, I am becoming more able to apply the skills that I have learned to case studies, which I believe are reflective of cases that I will encounter in practice. Overall, I believe that the education I have acquired at this point will help me gain a greater understanding of the skills I will need for clinical practice.

According to Bandura’s reciprocal causation model, the person, environment, and behavior interplay in order to transmit information to the observer. Because I have been deeply immersed in my studies, I have become involved in an enriched environment that will ultimately impact my behaviors. I will become a more effective practitioner as a consequence of these studies, and I will finally be able to achieve my identity as a career social worker.

My self-efficacy for this work has developed primarily as a consequence of my current studies in addition to my overall understanding of people. I believe that I will be successful in this field because I have an enhanced ability to understand the emotional and physical needs of others, which will in turn allow me to help them find ways to meet these needs. Furthermore, this understanding will help me effectively develop the client-counselor relationship, which helps to form a foundation of trust that is necessary for therapy. Overall, these experiences have facilitated my ability to become self-motivated and understand that I am responsible for my own success.

My belief that pursuing this degree and career would lead to positive outcomes was in part impacted by motivation from my parents, friends, and other family members. This demonstrates that one’s environment is an important indicator of success. Because I was told from a very young age that I would be successful in whichever endeavors I sought, I entered college feeling that I was ready to succeed. As a result, this success has perpetuated to this point and I strongly believe that I will be able to complete my degree with high grades. After graduation, this will enable me to find a job that is the perfect fit in my field and I will be able to help others as a social worker. I believe that it is important for me to continue to believe in myself to ensure that all of my dreams will come true.
