Walgreen, Essay Example

Essay

There are a few economic concepts that are present in the article such as inversion, stock-holder share, and government-funded reimbursement plans in regards to taxes. Inversion is when a company re-incorporates itself overseas in order to reduce their tax burden on income that they have essentially earned overseas. Stock-holder share is the number of stocks, or investments in a company, that any individual or corporation holds. Government-funded reimbursement plans are plans set up for companies that stay within a country, and the government gives them tax incentives for doing so.

The author of the article seems to be trying to sway the readers opinion. This can be seen with their use of adjectives and the way the phrase the syntax of the sentence. For instance, the author says that a series of moves will “mollify investors” and makes other statements about the positives of Walgreens staying in the country and doesn’t focus on any of the protests held when Walgreens was thinking about taking it’s business overseas.

There are important facts left out: for instance, the author didn’t interview anyone who may have negatively been affected by Walgreens moving overseas. The author didn’t focus on the “little man” that this could have affected.

The conclusion of the article makes sense. The author wrote about the shares of the company (from 31.4 cents up to 33.75 cents) and spoke about other ways the company is holding firm on steady ground during their decision to stay in the U.S. instead of U.K. or Switzerland.
