Wanting American Democracy, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 304

Essay

A dysfunctional and failed campaign finance system has marred American political arena in the recent times. The use of huge sums of dollars has been the characteristic in elections, which worries much with the dwindling local and the world economy. I think that the founders of democracy did not mean to bring the democracy we are witnessing now. We have perverted that democracy and reforms are imminent to take America in the right direction.

There should be interventions to reform American democracy and help bring desirable changes to the lives of citizens rather than making their lives hard. One of the strategies will be to reduce campaign commercial costs. This will be possible by engaging the Federal Communications Commission to make a change in its rules, thus, enabling acceptance of campaign commercials by television stations at the non-profit rate of public information announcement. We should encourage television stations to adopt the British or Israeli method where all campaign commercials occur after the nightly news during a half hour bloc.

Congress should consider making amendments on the constitution to address the negative effects of hefty spending in politics and elections. The Supreme Court has the mandate to control hefty spending, but if it cannot do so then amendments are necessary to ensure that politics and elections do not take a lot of money.

The American elections take a long time season, such that there are no other countries, which need the same time as the Americans. Nearly every year is an election year in America. This has led to obsession and partisan politics in most American citizens. Thus, people identify themselves and other citizens by their political parties rather than by the shared citizenship. We ought to shorten the time taken, by elections, to create extra time for people to work and build a strong and common citizenship.
