Waste Management Inc. has become the single greatest waste taking care of firm universally. The organization is waste administration, complete waste, and natural administrations firm situated in North America that was set up in 1971. The company’s system contains 367 gathering operations, 293 dynamic landfill transfer locales, 346 exchange stations, 146 reusing plants, 16 waste-to-vitality plants, 111 useful utilization landfill gas undertakings and 6 autonomous force creation plants. There supply chain of the company has enabled the company to link to its customers and suppliers in different parts of the world. It has also enabled the company to control its costs (Goldman et al, 30).
Companies are facing severe competition that leads to strategies that seek to reduce cost via minimizing all types of waste. National and global regulation and legislation is growing and customers are ever increasing concerned with the environmental impact of products and services (Goldman et al, 31). The firm’s main strength is their name recognition, which has been contributed by its effective supply towards waste management. Leading the industry with 20 million customers, Waste Management Inc. has a solid recycling and disposal foundation with a decipherable brand. All businesses compete for their target audience; nevertheless, when the industry changes, so must the company. Waste Management Inc. must adapt with industry changes (recycling, disposal zero waste) to keep a competitive advantage against their competition in all its plants across different geographical regions around the world. With such dominant name recognition, the company has the prospect to implement a recycling, as well as zero waste strategy that would significantly cut waste. This has been realized through its effective processes in its supply chain.
At the present, Waste Management Inc. faces threats in its supply chain from particular environments, like advocacy groups, as well as industry regulation. This will have a potential impact the value chain of the company since they will be forced to undertake some changes to comply with the regulation that will be costly for the company. Thus, having an advocacy group, like Sierra Club, may raise awareness to the public, which is the kind of press the company needs. This will likely to affect the reputation its effective supply chain that the company values. Industry regulation is cruelly strict when it comes to the waste industry. Existing and/or prospect regulations could handicap the company’s supply chain and their operational goals, as well as costs (Goldman et al, 33). Therefore, if the company fails to comply with the regulations, it will amount to a great risk to the company and a blow to its supply chain.
Shared value in the supply chain is important towards realizing the objective of the business. Waste Management Inc. has partnered with different stakeholders to make sure that the supply chain is effective and meets the requirements of the business. Furthermore, the company has embraced corporate social responsibility towards achieving its business and environmental goals through effective leadership. Waste Management Inc. believes that, for a firm to be victorious in the long-term and fashion value for its shareholders, it should as well create value for society. This has been possible through engaging all the stakeholders in the supply chain through redefining, reconceiving and cluster development practices. The company cares and empowers communities, suppliers, customers, workers, environment, and society at large. In this manner, the company will have created shared value in its supply chain (Wilson et al 56).
