Weeding Out the Weak, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 293

Essay

Many individuals believe that the weakest link of an organization reflects the overall effectiveness of an organization. It appears that the most destructive trait of a low performer that undermines the team and detracts from an organization’s success is attitude. If an employee is constantly negative in his or her attitude towards other employees and their work, they will begin to convince their coworkers that they are undergoing a negative experience as well. If this does not occur, the behavior will simply distract from work and make others less willing to work with the negative individual on a team project.

If I were the manager, I would address this trait with the low performing employee by directing conversation with him or her. It is important for the employee to be aware that this is not acceptable behavior for the workplace and that it is their responsibility to act as a team player. It would be essential to determine the source of the employee’s woes and to correct these problems if necessary. If there is not a deeper source of the problem and the employee’s personal attitude is the only factor impacting this behavior, it would be essential to implement corrective training programs. Ultimately, if these efforts are put forth and the employee demonstrates that he or she is unwilling or unable to change, the manager should consider terminating the employee if this does not violate an employment contract.

Ultimately, it is better to avoid situations in which employees of this sort are hired. It would therefore be necessary for the human resources team to employees based on a thorough search and interview process. In this manner, only those who are excited about their work and therefore willing to succeed in the field will be hired.
