What I Know Now, Essay Example

Essay

There are many things in life I wish I had done, done sooner, done differently, or in some cases, not done at all. It is a cliché to say “if I knew then what I know now,” but clichés exist for a reason. There are many lessons in life that I learned later that would have been helpful had I known them sooner; for me, many of these lessons are related in one way or another to the issue of education. I have always valued education, but I have also had to balance my interest in learning and in advancing my education with the realities of earning a living, caring for my family, and all of the other demands and pressures of daily life. Before I began my RN-BSN journey, I wish I had known what direction my career and my interests would take me, as I would have done things differently, and done them sooner.

I graduated with my ADN seventeen years ago, and embarked on my career in the health care profession. Along with pursuing a career, I had family and personal concerns that placed significant demands on my schedule, and the distractions of these demands made it easy, or at least possible, to push back concerns I may have had about continuing my education in that period of my life. At the same time, I was still young (or at least younger than I am now), and I did not always make the best decisions about how to manage my time. I do not mean to indicate that I wasted time, necessarily, but I did have that sense that we all have when we are young that we will always be young, and that we have all the time in the world to accomplish what we want to accomplish in life.

Now I find that nearly two decades have gone by since I completed my ADN, and I find myself wishing that I had returned to school to get into a nurse practitioner program much sooner. Having said that, I do not intend to let this feeling get me down; if anything, I am trying to use it to spur me to stay focused now that I have returned to school. I may not be as young as I once was, but I still have a positive outlook on the future. I intend to learn from my mistakes so that I do not look back in another seventeen years and wish that I had done things differently now.
