While creativity has the same meaning for each individual, every professional applies the creative process in a different manner. As a student in network and information technology security, it is important for me to apply the creative process in determining new solutions for security. However, it is important to consider that the creativity process could be applied on many different levels. Whether the interactions of employees, implementation of software, or creation of security rules impacts best practices, it is important for the information technology professional to use creative thinking to determine how to best create and implement security protections.
According to the cognitive domain diagram, it is apparent that knowledge of the basis of creativity. However, it is important for information technology professionals to have more than knowledge because this information is not useful if it cannot be understood and applied to a unique situation. Therefore, a large portion of the creative thinking process that individuals in my field participate in pertain directly to applying old understandings to new situations. Since the security threats that face modern computing are constantly growing, it is important for network security leaders to determine how to apply old techniques or even how to combine them as needed to confer benefit in new situations.
Since network security and information technology includes many subfields of work, it is also important to consider that specialists in each of these categories need to apply a higher level of creativity in their daily thinking. These individuals are required to constantly solve similar problems on a day to day basis, but with slight nuances added. These skills could range from the design or alteration of new security software and hardware that could be implemented by organizations to ensure a higher degree of safety for use. This is an especially important consideration in fields such as health care, in which it is becoming increasingly important to find ways to protect sensitive patient data.
Another consideration is the protections that employee logins offer. Many companies do not truly allow for the protection of their company’s data due to the lack of protection offered by their passwords. It is therefore necessary for the information technology professional to be creative in these situations and determine which rules the passwords created should follow, how frequently they should be changed, and how long an employee’s computer should be logged out for inactivity. It is the information technology professional’s unique responsibility to use creativity in these situations because there is a need to create a customized solution for each company based on their needs.
Overall, it is important to apply creativity in the field of network security and information technology because it is helpful to create new solutions to old security problems and to keep up with changing security needs. Applying creativity will allow these professionals to more efficiently determine effective solutions for the field, allowing our understanding of security to evolve at a more rapid rate. Creativity is important across a diverse number of fields because it allows individuals to take the specialized information they already have about a particular subject and apply it to a new situation. The use of creativity is important because it helps drive progress in a manner that will allow humanity to benefit more greatly from the new understandings it helps us develop.
