What Is Social Entrepreneurship? Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 294

Essay

Social entrepreneurship could be defined as the employment of innovative solutions to address a particular social issue in a wide range of areas including education, health, jobs, and food. Social entrepreneurs realize older ways of addressing social issues are ineffective or inadequate, thus, they seek to invent new ways to address the issues more effectively and preferably with fewer resources. Social entrepreneurs may be aiming to solve social issues, with no regard for profits, they do seek ideas from the corporate world in order to improve accountability processes and better understand the pace of progress.

One of the organizations I personally connect with is (Kiva). Kiva doesn’t direct engage in social entrepreneurship but instead is an online platform that connects those who wish to help with those who are determined to take charge of their lives. I believe the strongest point of Kiva is that it doesn’t encourage conventional donations which only temporary relieve a social problem but instead is aimed at helping people to help themselves. Many of the individuals seeking funding on Kiva are those who want to start a business. One of the great things about Kiva is that it allows any individual to engage in social entrepreneurship and the funding requirements are so low that most people in the developed countries can easily afford them. Kiva doesn’t only match those who seek funds with those who provide funds but it also increases social awareness of the issues prevalent in many developing countries of the world. I also like the fact that Kiva takes measures to minimize the waste of resources usually associated with many non-profit organizations such as administrative costs. On Kiva, hundred percent of the loans go to the receivers, with Kiva taking no cut.
