Essay

The ethics involved in conducting pediatric clinical trials are necessary, but often create gaps in knowledge that effectively prevent healthcare professionals from making significant advances in the fight against childhood cancer. In many cases, we incorrectly use our understanding of drug efficacy and interaction in adults to treat children with the same disease, and it is important that we understand that children and adults are distinct patient populations. As a masters level nurse, I wish to determine how more substantial clinical trials could be conducted in children so that this patient group can maximally benefit from scientific discovery.

There are many aspects of research ethics that are intuitive for studying drug efficacy in children, such as requiring consent from parents and ensuring that drugs are safe in pre-clinical trials. However, there are many regulatory roadblocks that slow down the process of initiating clinical trials and recruiting patients to studies. The pediatric patient population would benefit from an accelerated form of this process, especially for cancers in which there is currently no sufficient standard of care. There is a greater need to find adequate treatment for these patients and it is important that no time is wasted in doing so.

Ultimately, I wish to review the current research ethics and guidelines that regulate how pediatric clinical trials are conducted to determine how we can revise them to better suit studies of rare cancers and for those with high mortality rates. The current system of drug development is slow and many successful drugs will not obtain FDA approval until 15 to 20 years after its initial development. While rigorous drug testing is necessary, the delay in initiating clinical trials and recruiting patients is not, and I wish to find ways to bridge this gap in my studies.

What is your motivation to earn the Master of Science in Nursing degree?

Since the beginning of my nursing studies, I have become interested in further understanding and adding to my current medical knowledge. The Master of Science in Nursing degree is an ideal pursuit for me because I wish to conduct original research that will contribute to the field, in addition to gaining more experience and knowledge that could be passed down to the future generation of nurses. By obtaining a Master of Science, I believe that I will be able to fully contribute to the world and make it a better place.

Although I always knew that I wanted to be a nurse, I began to appreciate the value of my instructors during my undergraduate training. I developed an immense respect for my superiors and came to believe that I would benefit society by following in their footsteps. This experience led me to conclude that I wanted to train and instruct other nurses and that enhancing my own medical knowledge could contribute greatly to this endeavor. To do so, obtaining a Master of Science is a necessary prerequisite.

Additionally, my research interests have led me to consider pursuing a doctorate-level nursing education. The training provided to me in this program will prepare me well for this journey, in which I will contribute new information to the scientific world. Ultimately, the Master of Science in Nursing degree will help me pursue my love of learning, teaching, and knowledge.

What personal changes do you plan to implement in order to succeed in this academically rigorous and demanding environment?

I am aware that the pursuit of the Master of Science in Nursing degree will be more rigorous than my undergraduate training, and I am prepared to make personal changes in order to succeed in this academically rigorous and demanding environment. It will be necessary for me to create a study schedule so that I have time to master the medical information I am taught in addition to setting aside time to ensure that I am able to sleep properly and remain healthy throughout my studies. Most importantly, I will set aside a set time each day to read peer-reviewed journal articles in order to gain a better understanding of the type of research and specific knowledge I wish to pursue.

Throughout my enrollment in the program, I will prioritize my studies, but also create a balance with my personal life. I have many friends and family members who I know will support me throughout my training, which I believe will enhance my work. Furthermore, I plan to set aside a period of time each day to review what I have learned and to read the textbook pages relevant to the next day’s lectures in order to take full advantage of the presented information.

Ultimately, I believe that if I create a schedule to stay organized and remain committed to my plan to stay ahead of my work, I will be successful in this program. During my undergraduate training, I believe my organization and study skills allowed me to achieve greatness and I plan to apply the same technique to my master’s level training.
