What Role Does Ethics Have in My Life? Essay Example

Pages: 3

Words: 868

Essay

The legendary philosopher Socrates is among the few who held the conviction that in the most absolute sense knowledge is the collective product of living realities in active display. In other words the prime mover of human actions is gyrated from knowledge—a knowledge that can be of diverse elements and purposes. Beyond this superficial contention, Socrates lays credence to the fact that at the core of the knowledge lies the knowledge of self as a precursor. To this end, everything that will be discussed in this essay is essentially a repository reflection of who I am that has influenced what I stand for. Tragically, our world is besieged by mounting symptomatic deficiencies of a people that are a miserable loss about self-knowledge resulting in bizarre consequences of amnesia of the essence of life.

Like everybody else, I live in a world that is governed by a perceived or real sense of morality, to say the least. Within this clumsy idea of a morally conscious world lies the fine line between ethics and morality itself. What is interesting within this framework is the need to acknowledge that what counts is not the moral fiber that has knitted human civilizations dating back to pre-historic times but rather my conscious and unconscious actions that are reasonably within my sphere of control. Freedom and use of discretionary will is at the core of this factor. It is against this background that I state candidly that contrary to the massive invasion of materialism and deeply secular world, my choice of regulation is carved along moderation, decency and godliness.

In many ways, I am inclined to apply the economic concept of opportunity cost to life in its entirety. Choices have to be made always, be it consciously or unconsciously. In making these choices it becomes apparent that going for one alternative comes at the expense of one or several other alternatives. Bringing it to the realities of our day and age, there are tons of invitations to initiate people into a vile chase of materialism at whatever cost. The standard has been shifted to encourage people to keep going for more materials that will is intended to provide a solace for the insatiable human appetite. Achieving all these comes at the expense of family life, human relationships and the eventual destruction of the human soul. Satisfying the ego comes at the expense of satisfying the soul. Greed is being promoted in a grand scale.

In contrast to the pursuit of excessive material glory, the beauty of life is hidden in modesty, charity and selflessness. My humble take on this sad trend is that, life should be built around a reckon for modesty that has room to discern how to build on the awareness of self-sufficiency, subject the human lust to submissive control and in return redirect attention towards given back to the world what it needs from us.

Discipline as I have been made to understand can be likened to a mighty strength that is brought under control. The world will be a better place, if there is a conscientious attempt to restore decency to all aspects of our daily endeavors—including our dressing culture, language, attitude, actions and inactions. It is at this level that the dignity of the human will be restored to its original glory. This can never be achieved until, contemporary dressing be done in a manner that reflects respect as opposed to glorify female sexual nudity; until we decide to replace swear and profane words from our daily communication further sparing little children the unpleasant scenario of growing into them.

Of paramount importance to me in this essay is the fact that without realizing it more and more people living in our day and age are living a senseless life because of a grave omission. This omission is the blatant failure to reach summit of self-knowledge that will usher them into abundant knowledge. The consequence of this omission is the tragedy of gross shift and misapplication of priorities within the illusory quest of given life true meaning. Families are breaking up at alarming rates because increasingly couples who do not even know themselves well enough are risking understanding and even living with other people. Being disillusioned by the seemingly unworkable natural female male relationship in wedlock, their vain minds dribble them into believing that same sex marriage holds the panacea. The ugly reality is that same sex marriage is also carrying a huge bandwagon of dead souls. Ultimately, where can the world be said to be headed? A social disaster awaits the world of today for which posterity shall hold us culpable.

Proliferation of secularism as opposed to Godliness is doing the world of today no good also. By leaps and bounds, the trajectory of ethics as engrained in morality is being relegated to the background. Replacing God with human beings is certainly a terrible blow that can be seen from all angles. It is only when man after exhausting all his finite abilities to deal with the challenges of life resorts to suicide as a cheap alternative to real living. The rising homicide and suicide figures are a direct consequence of the incapacities of carnal world that can turn its fortunes around by embracing Godliness.
