Essay

Although most of the focus in present-day Society is on managing the coronavirus global crisis, we ought to consider the risks that the future holds and prepare accordingly. This inspires the following Signals that I would include in the 2022 report: (1) Learning from the Future, (2) Pushed to the Edge, and (3) Real Virtualities.

Intelligence automation plays a large role in future-proofing businesses. An intelligence model can allow an organization to be transformative and responsive in making the right decisions. An AI-guided experience in the hands of business experts allows the people closest to the problem to apply advanced analytics so as to make important decisions in time and with maximum impact on change, which helps these people meet the ever-changing needs of consumers and the competitive landscape while still leaning into their human judgments.

For as long as one can remember, the organizational structure of businesses has strictly been hierarchical: with many layers that affect the effectiveness of the decision making process. This man-made hierarchy results in a world of disengaged employees who would do not go the extra mile. In contrast, future-ready organizations incorporate a flattened hierarchy, reinforcing business objectives with strong performance management, such as agile teams. Such teams bring together cross-functional skills and a wide range of experience to make prompt decisions that overcome emerging business setbacks.

Future-proof businesses benefit from the use of virtual reality (VR) training for an increasingly remote-based workforce. VR training provides an immersive learning experience that recreates real-life settings and simulates work challenges for new recruits and employees to gain on-the-job training in a risk-free environment. The accessibility to VR training can expand the talents the HR can recruit globally, which can foster a diverse and inclusive workforce. Further, it can enhance an employee’s professional development along with a reduction in downtown to support businesses dedicated to long-term success.
