What’s In a Name, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 327

Essay

The No Child Left Behind Act has left a plethora of opportunity for new small businesses to come to the fore and provide educational services. Naturally, that is just what happened. So here it is, the small e-business for adolescents of the high school grades to provide them with online tutoring. The only thing left on which to decide is the name.

So what’s in a name? Everything; a name is the foundation of identity. “The right name can make your company the talk of the town” (Start Your Own Business”). “The wrong one can doom it to obscurity and failure” (Start Your Own Business”). Ideally, your name should “convey the expertise, value and uniqueness of the product or service you have developed” (Start Your Own Business”)

With that in mind, what is the best approach to picking a name? Making one up or going with a more functional one. In this case, it would be best to go with a more functional one. The reasons being that if someone googles online tutoring, tutoring named websites will pop up first. Even so, one would want to “avoid generic names that literally describe the product or service, like Computer Consulting Company, Appliance Sales and Service, Inc., etc.” make it informative and original (Allen, 2010).

So in a way, the answer is that one wants both a functional name and an original one. “The name you choose can play an integral part in the marketing of your company” (**). “Your name projects your image, brand, and position in the marketplace” (**).

In conclusion, the name is the starting block for the success or failure of a company. A lot of research should be conducted prior to picking a name because everything else will depend upon it.
