When You Were Upset as a Child, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 327

Essay

When I was upset as a child, I responded by going to my parents for love and support. While I do not remember the first time I was separated from my parents, I could imagine that it would have been a traumatic experience for me. However, knowing my parents, it is likely that they were not willing to return to support me because they understood that it would be important for me to become independent. I do not generally find myself recreating relationships with the same characteristics through which I was handled as a child, although I do believe that the theme of independence is an important one, and it is somewhat bothersome when people appear to be too dependent on others. This seems to closely mirror the concept of secure attachment, because I would feel confident with my parents present, but this confidence would disappear when they would leave (Myers, 2012).

Attachment appears to be a cultural concept that we create because there are some cultures that celebrate death and look upon it as a natural and necessary process. When individuals die, we miss them because our connection with them can no longer exist in the same manner. It is likely that if we were raised in a culture that was more accepting of death, our reaction to it would be entirely different. However, it is difficult to change our views on cultural aspects of society, so it would be challenging to compete against these commonly held views as adults.

Attachment can be used to describe social interactions to some extent, but not much else. It may define how we choose to begin, maintain, and end personal relationships in addition to how we interact with others, to an extent. However, it is too simplistic to define personal relationships according to attachment styles and then to expect these styles to dictate people’s actions. Rather, there are more complex contributors to human behavior.
