Technology Informatics Guiding Educational Reform (TIGER) is the main source of nursing informatics capabilities (Schlotzer & Madsen, 2010). The aim of TIGER is to put together informatics to the performance of every nurse. The recommendations and the best practices of TIGER support the inventive duty of a nurse in the incorporation of a combination of people, procedures, and technology for changing and going past simple problem-solving methods of overcoming difficulties by using information and technology to concentrate on the advantage of practice and technology. The highlighted characteristics are chosen exemplars in which the heads and the nurses bringing together people, procedures, and technology to provide resolutions. These exemplars exemplify improved workflows, knowledge of proof-based practice, and engagement (Schlotzer & Madsen, 2010). According to TIGER, these innovative changes need keen insight, extraordinary listening and observational skills, expertise mediation, and management of group activities, in addition to good information-sharing and negotiating skills, the capability to encourage and involve, and the ability to stay alert on objectives, and positive results.
A Usability and Clinical Application Design Challenge
In the case study 1, the challenges arose on the usability and application of the electronic medical record (EMR). Although this was implemented and installed to help patients, there were some of the failures on the part of the clinicians. As in this case, the documents and the order sets were not uploaded and modified to the site. Moreover, another challenge arose from the failure to buy the needed computer terminals in time and arrived when the implemented technology was supposed to commence. Therefore, the EMR did not start working on the intended dates. This led to the clinicians competing for working stations, and the workflow was not tested, recorded, or rated. Hence, some failures may have occurred. The whole resulted into confusion as the information concerning the patients, such as mothers’ blood types, newborn nursery, and L&D information was not available. This posed danger on patients since even the users had no clue on where to locate the information (Chapter 14, “Usability, and Clinical Application Design”). The challenges that were experienced were because of implementation of the TIGER design. The team that was involved failed but the design was a positive move.
To overcome the HIT challenges and concerns one should be able to plan and arrange earlier enough (Kaufman et al., 2006). All the orders must be made in time, and the concerned nurses and clinician should be educated on the way to handle and utilize the HIT, which are to be introduced.
