Essay

Paramount part of public safety

Hazards and emergencies may befall the society thus calling for protection of the entire public. Sometimes it might be impossible to offer protection to the entire public under the prevailing circumstances. In this case, it becomes prudent to target a particular segment of the population who require priority protection based on the level of vulnerability. Some people in the society may feel greater impact as compared to others. Protection of the vulnerable people in the society is an issue that is associated with a significant degree of complexity as well as sensitivity. The children, the elderly and disabled people are sensitive groups in terms of public safety. The welfare of these groups of people should be protected and promoted as a matter of priority. Leaving such groups exposed to danger may result to irrevocable harm that may haunt the entire society for the rest of life. They are unable to protect themselves and therefore, when left exposed to danger may lead to harmful effects such as sexual and physical abuse that result to permanent scars among the victims. This therefore translates to societal, ethical, criminal justice as well as a moral issue (Crampton, 131-144).

The children should particularly be given the first priority because in most cases they are unaware of dangers confronting them. Children also constitute a highly vulnerable group that thence requires the greatest echelon of protection. Children are incapable for self protection and defense against situations that may be dangerous. They can also not detect developments in dangerous situations and self protection is therefore not possible. The vulnerability of the child is attributed to a number of important factors that hampers the future growth and functionality of the child. Remember that, children are in their developmental stages and any disruption in this process can lead to a permanent damage in the life of the child
