Conflict Handling Style

After taking the survey, I scored highest for more of a laid back conflict handling style.  While I am not avoidant of conflict in itself, I tend to stay back and allow individuals to work out their problems.  Trying to maintain space and respect for others, this style of conflict handling characterizes how I approach such instances, as the survey reveals.

The advantages of this type of style are clear.  Intrusive and very direct personalities are not positive ways to deal with conflict, at least in all situations.  My conflict handling style allows people room to work out differences in a more pleasant and respectful manner, rather than getting involved in too many things at once.

On the other side, my style is known for being taken advantage of at times.  If I am not careful, more “type A” personalities can overrun my authority and demonstrate general lack of respect.  Also, some people simply need more management than others.

Becoming more comfortable with being forward would offer further benefits.  While I like the conflict handling style that I scored for, being more comfortable with being direct would potentially help in some cases.  Perhaps I would not be comfortable being more confrontational than I am right not, which unfortunately may be necessary in some situations.

Overall my result was along the lines of what I expected.  My laid back style of conflict handling suits me well in most situations.  There are some drawbacks that are realized with this style, which can be overcome by getting used to these weaknesses.
