Why Are You Going to College? Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 326

Essay

My life has been a series of adventures that have helped to shape my positive attitude.  This is, in part, due to the wide variety of diverse people that I have been honored to meet during my travels both within the United States and abroad.  To me, the college experience represents more than just an academic education:  instead, it is an opportunity to begin an adventure in a new environment that will help to develop my critical thinking skills so that I can become a positive and active force for change in my own life and the lives of others.

I have been lucky enough to travel the world, an experience that has taught me valuable lessons in independence, self-sufficiency, and resilience.  I have lived in six different cities, travelled throughout China, worked as a volunteer in Southeastern Asia, and experienced many aspects of American life.  Throughout my many journeys, I have had the opportunity to witness cultural differences first-hand while also learning that, despite these differences, we all share the human desire to live comfortably without fear.  Although I haven’t yet chosen a major, I would like to study subjects such as philosophy, international development, and psychology so that I can gain a better understanding of the issues that motivate human behavior and the ways in which individuals can be encouraged to take a greater interest in their fellow human beings.

As a traveller, I have come to see life as an endless journey.  The train of time takes me through a variety of stations that allow me to see new cities, meet new friends, and learn more about myself with each passing day.  Now that I have reached adulthood, the pressures of duty and responsibility are encouraging me to make choices that will impact on the rest of my life.  There are countless routes in front of me, and I believe that college is the perfect place to discover where my future journeys will take me.
