Why do Some View Speech Perception as Special, Essay Example

It is very easy to understand both side so the argument that speech perception as special versus speech perception as ordinary because it all begins with the brain and cognitive thinking. However, most arguments for speech perception as special seem to make the most common sense. The views concerning speech perceptions as special do make good arguments for speech perception as special. However, speech perception is special because it is different from listening to ordinary sound like listen to music. Listening to music is has no linguistic meanings while speech perception involves meaning, but to grasp the meaning requires first to hear the sound of speech. For example, environmental sounds do not usually have any linguistic meanings.  But speech could be seen as another human sense that deciphers the sounds that has meaning. When a person is grasping the meanings of speech sounds they perceive the sound with a meaning versus listening and deciphering music has no meaning. In contrast, speech perception as ordinary means the action of perceiving speech involves hearing ordinary sounds. Speech perception as ordinary is like the normally listening to a signal as the phoneme perception which is accomplished by detecting characteristics in the acoustic signal. This is the same way speech perception as ordinary detects acoustic signals. However, one cannot argue that the difference between the experiences of listening to speech in a language that you already understand versus the experience of listening to speech in a language you are not familiar is entirely cognitive.

In reference pertaining to phoneme restoration which is perceived perception in which a person hears a sound that is not actually present, which suggest that speech perception is special. This logic as speech perception being special seems to be accurate because the brain creates the missing sound regardless, if one letter was replaced with another sound.
