Why Huey Long Was Good for Louisiana, Essay Example

Words: 345

Essay

Between the years 1928 to 1932, Long served as the 40th governor of Louisiana. During his term, he became most known for the Share Our Wealth program which he imposed to create a system that would make a more balanced distribution of wealth from the high-end earners [most likely the corporations] towards the lower end earners [the commoners]. In this program, he assessed the tax that is placed upon the shoulders of the business organizations and increased it accordingly to be able to share the profit of the said corporations towards the people. This was favored even by the big businesses as it boosted their performance in the market given that the people had more power to purchase than they ever did before. This created a great positive curb on the aspect by which poverty and homelessness have been regulated in the state.

Given that he faced the challenges of bringing about hope on the people’s minds amidst the emergence of the Great Depression, Long knew that he needed to make sure that all individuals under his administration would feel the ease that his governance gives for the people at the face of economic adversity. To do this, he insisted on spending his project funds for the sake of improving public works, developing education and improving healthcare facilities especially dedicated for the old-aged members of the community. With this, he believes that as he intends to invest on the people, they would also trust his administration therefore garnering their support for the aim of creating a more workable economy for the whole community. This particular aspect of his leadership proved to have a positive impact on the living condition of the population living in Louisiana as their needs and welfare were all given proper care for. Realatively, this fact reflected the personal interest that Long had on his people and the consideration he has placed on matters that are most important for them; hence making his approach to governance and administration rather effective and valuable to the whole community of individuals he served during his term.
