Why I Am Suitable For the Opportunity, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 611

Essay

My application for this scholarship award is informed by two factors. First, is my desire to acquire relevant knowledge and eventually utilise this knowledge for the improvement of the general practice of my desired discipline. The second factor has to do with the fact that besides meeting the criteria, for selection for this scholarship award, I am also faced by enormous challenges in my quest to acquire the relevant education and skill. I first explain my personal details that make it hard for me to acquire education without any financial support. I will then explain how I have satisfied the criteria for this international excellence award.

I am currently a second year student taking a major in Digital graphics communications. For my background, I am a divorced immigrant from South Korea Living in Canada currently. I am therefore a single mother trying my best to bring up my Children. This has made life quite challenging for me as I struggle to meet the living costs. The financial demands placed upon me by the responsibility of bringing up my children have not dampened my hopes of acquiring decent education. I have therefore explored all the available opportunities to the extent of taking up a mortgage on my small house to try fund my spiralling expenses.  This demonstrates that I have the burning desire to acquire decent qualifications irrespective of the constraints that I am faced with.

My track record speaks volumes about my diligence as well as leadership initiatives especially within the SAIT community. My average score so far in the course work is good with a GPA of 3.96. This implies that I am quite committed to the course I am taking and I aim to do better once my financial burden is eased. It is also vital to note that my class attendance record is good since I have attended all my classes with dedication. I believe that given an opportunity I will set a good academic record in my course and make good of the scholarship.

My participation in other leadership initiatives is also good enough. I am a strong believer of servant leadership. My principal is that leadership qualities are best groomed and demonstrated through servitude. To this end I have served as a volunteer for ELF classes at SAIT in the period from October 2007 to June 2008. My basic responsibility duty was helping international students learn basic computer skills like MS software environments and helping their written work. I not only impacted on their progress in attaining competence but I also had a chance to hone my people skills as I rendered my services. Besides all this I built a nice network of friends with people from various nationalities.

My contribution to the SAIT community did not end here. I am currently still offering my skills as a volunteer for the SAIT school newspaper “The Emery Weal” as a graphic design assistant for this academic year. My willingness to volunteer my skills not only underlies my commitment to professional development but also demonstrates my commitment to my pursuit for knowledge. My aim is to contribute positively to the SAIT community at all times and in the best way that I can.

I believe that knowledge is a rich fountain from which we all drink. The keenness we have is what helps us identify and utilise opportunities for our growth. It is in this hope for growth that we strive to not only add value to ourselves but also to the people around us. I believe that given this scholarship, I will make the best of it and make a good impact in the community as well as improving my personal welfare.
