Why I Chose to Attend College, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 558

Essay

There are myriad reasons why I chose to attend college. After graduating high school I was looking forward to going to college that same summer.  The fact of knowing that I will be taking classes that I am interested in and the option of making my own schedule was something I was looking forward as well as willing to commit to. The main reasons that I chose to attend college are: to have a career in a field that I enjoy, build a solid education foundation for a better chance for success in life and to make more money than my current job in the military.

When I could remember as a child and through to my teenage years I was always interested in sports. Playing basketball with my family and friends and having good times. Once my friends and I were old enough to drive, we started playing basketball more often one night out of the week. Well my interest in recording our games and editing them to highlight reels like Sportscenter became an addiction. I also recorded our annual thanksgiving day football games, editing footage and creating DVD’s for everyone to enjoy. After high school, I knew what I wanted to study, and that was in Television and Media Production. My goal was to be the guy who holds the audio dish to capture sound on the sidelines of Professional Football Games. At that time September 11, 2001 occurred and I felt that I needed to serve my country so I enlisted in the Army in media production. At the time of enlistment I only accomplished my Associates in Science in Telemedia Video Production. So my goal of getting my Bachelor’s in Film was on hold.

Since the video and film field requires a lot of  hands on classroom work that I could not commit to being in the army, I decided to major in sports and health sciences to where I can at least get my general education requirements completed and who knows, after taking core classes I might like the sports and science field. So now I am focused on slowly but surely building a solid education foundation taking the steps toward achieving in getting my Bachelor’s in Sports and Health Sciences. I at least know that once I complete my studies and my experience in the military, I will have an advantage for a stable job and to make more money than in the past. I will live more comfortably, be able to support a family and have balance in my life. My parents worked hard their whole life from poverty and migrated from another country just to provide a better life for their children. For me to squander this opportunity in life would be a disappointment to my family and especially myself.

In conclusion, the reason I chose to attend college was to have a career in which I enjoy doing what I do, build a solid education foundation to be proficient, reliable and a subject matter expert in what I do. To ultimately make enough money to have a family, have a house and overall live life comfortably to where I have balance in my life. I aim at having a fulfilling career where I can also impact positively on other people’s lives and impart knowledge to them in a bid to improve them.
