Why I Want to Be a Nurse Practitioner, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 665

Essay

My aspirations to work in the nursing field began when I was a very young child. I have always enjoyed helping others in many different ways; therefore, I strive to make others feel better, in spite of their circumstances. It is often very difficult for others to ask for help, and I aim to bridge that gap in order to support their needs effectively. I am currently a Registered Nurse and will complete my Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing in May 2016. My employment in a busy metropolitan emergency department has enabled me to work with a diverse group of patients and to provide care and treatment in a variety of ways. These experiences have been essential to my growth within the nursing profession and my ability to understand patients and their diagnoses. The emergency department has been an important step forward in my nursing career because I have gained exposure to many different types of patients in a variety of situations, and this has demonstrated my ability to be resilient and to work well under pressurized situations.

With my role in the emergency department, I have discovered that the environment is fast-paced and requires a strong ability to multitask under specific conditions; therefore, it is important for me to continue to expand my skillset and to recognize my value in supporting high quality care and treatment for all patients. I have expanded my knowledge of the profession and have grown into a caring and nurturing individual with greater self-confidence and a true desire to help others. However, I would like to obtain additional training and guidance in working to diagnose, treat, and prescribe for my patients, along with other skills that will facilitate my continued growth and professional development. It is important to me to have a clearer understanding of the objectives of my department and what is required to ensure that my patients receive the best possible care and treatment, given the circumstances that are present and which have brought them to the hospital to begin with.

One area where I desire to expand my growth in nursing practice is to collaborate with patients regarding their specific needs and wants while they remain in the emergency department. Since this is often a chaotic and challenging environment in which to communicate, I believe that it provides an opportunity to bridge the gaps when knowledge is lacking and patients do not understand their current states of health. I also believe that patients may provide valuable input regarding their own care and treatment that could also be adapted to other cases, and they may also provide a different perspective that may be useful in supporting the lives of other patients by sharing their experiences. I strongly believe that patient health requires a comprehensive focus that emphasizes wellness and prevention in order to guide patients on their health journey towards improved quality of life. All patients deserve the opportunity to experience greater health and wellbeing, and this requires a greater understanding of their circumstances and the common factors that enable nurses to care for patients in a consistent manner to support improved quality of care.

I am most interested in working in emergency medicine or with women who possess specific healthcare needs that require further attention and emphasis. It is important to me to utilize my skills and knowledge in order to support my patients effectively and to be mindful of the challenges that they face throughout their lives. I believe that my knowledge, skillset, and compassion will provide a greater understanding of their needs, while also recognizing that their voices must be heard and supported by the work that nurses perform. It is my responsibility to my patients to ensure that their experiences are positive and create meaningful results, while also engaging them in their own plans of care and treatment as much as possible. This will facilitate a patient care experience that is of the best possible quality and is focused on the patient above all else.
