Essay

Werner was a renowned German sociologist by his inquiry in to an absence of socialism in US, and his question irritated socialist theorists who remained thunderstruck by the devastatingly capitalist temperament evident in the United States (Werner, 1976). The answer to this question can only be attributed to American dream that ingrains the concept that every person has the capabilities of succeeding on condition of being left at the disposal of individual accord into the psyche of the nation since its foundation. This outlook as well as attitude has been maintained and safeguarded since the beginning through regular vigilance.

Socialist theory best explain the absence of socialism in the US. The success of an average American is determined by how soon he or she can become rich. Consequently, a common feature in the national character of Americans is being restless and striving at all times in the economic life of Americans. The American who can be considered as most energetic as well as best performers are actively engaged in economic oriented careers in contrast to the Europeans who take active participation in political affairs.

The working class in America has played a critical role in ensuring that socialism in the United States due to the existing inequalities as well as stratification evident among its ranks. However, workers in America never oppose capitalism emotionally and intellectually in entirety. The dependency theory on the other hand plays a critical role in explanation of evolution of the poor nations (Werner, 1976). It however fails to account for the coexistence of object poverty alongside sophisticated industrial production. Currently, socialism has ceased to be pure and innocent ideal because the appeals that were once associated with socialism has been stained by authoritarian regimes that have used the name and fame of socialism to rule.
