Why K-12 Students Should Wear Uniform, Essay Example

Uniform signifies unity and loyalty. It gives you a feeling of belonging to a place or institution and gives you an identity. It arouses passion and loyalty and nothing confirms this as convincingly as fans’ devotion to sports team jerseys. Uniform is the closest thing to a flag though unlike flag, it is wearable. Every reason mentioned so far and many more can be used to support the adoption of uniform as a mandatory dress code for K-12 students.

K-12 is the final hurdle in the way of college thus, there should be instilled certain values in the students to help them prepare better for the life ahead. Clothes are one of the greatest annual expenditures for a K-12 student even though the pain is still borne by the parents. Students should be taught to live on modest means and uniform not only prevents clothing expenditure but also the pressure to compete with peers. Even after K-12 students have graduated from high school, their uniform keeps reminding them of the place that gave them foundation. Loyalty could turn out to be a great asset in real life because loyal and trust people are pretty rare in this world.

It’s a human nature to overestimate needs and underestimate possessions. The result is that we seldom become fully aware of our surprisingly strong adaptive capabilities except through painful experiences. But no rule of success dictates that painful experiences are an inevitable component of the ‘success equation”. A wise person welcomes free lessons if somehow, pain and cost could be avoided. Uniform is one of the most effective modes of teaching our K-12 students, the difference between needs and desires, because most financial ruins in the real world happen due to the failure of adults to differentiate between needs and wants.

Uniform performs every function, a dress is supposed to perform except maybe satisfying fashion urges. Uniform promotes respect for rules and instills discipline. It builds self-monitor qualities in the students. It also promotes equality among the students who often come from different economic and social backgrounds.

If no other reason convinces the opponents of uniform, then we would only like to say that every night before they go to bed, we want our K-12 students to think about the next day and not the dress they are going to wear. Uniform reminds our students that they not only represent themselves but also the institutions they belong to and this greater awareness of the consequences of one’s actions is exactly what promotes respect for laws. After all, our K-12 students attend high school to become more useful members of the society so why not give them an additional tool to maximize their high school learning.
