Why Vampire’s Never Die, Essay Example

Words: 579

Essay

My favorite essay among these reading is “Why Vampire’s Never Die” by Guillermo Del Toro. The primary reason that I’m interested in this topic is because the history of vampires and stores about them is relevant to popular culture. I grew up reading stories like Dracula and have recently watched the Twilight series, so I was interested in determining how human fascination with these tales began. The author went into a very in depth discussion concerning the vampire myth, explaining that it had existed in many different cultures since ancient times. I also enjoyed the parallel that author discusses between the existence of vampires in fiction and the human imagination. Ultimately, humanity has created this myth in order to better understand the world.

The author was able to hold my interest because he introduced his topic by explaining its importance to the reader. It is difficult to imagine a world in which we are not approached with the idea of the existence of vampires on a daily basis, whether it be presented to us on television or brought up in a conversation with a friend. Therefore, this statement drew me in to the argument because I realized how important the concept of vampires is to our daily life. To prove his point, Del Toro cites a variety of historical concepts regarding the vampire myth in addition to pulling information from the stories that utilize these ideas to further our perception of these creatures. Utilizing these examples were particular important to the efficacy of the passage because by mentioning stories that many of his readers have previously encountered, such as Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Anne Rice’s Interview With A Vampire, continued to draw the interest of the reader as the passage was read.

My least favorite passage was “Only Daughter” by Sandra Cisneros. While I appreciate the difficult time that the narrator had while growing up, her life has very few parallels to my own. Although I have siblings, I am certainly not the only daughter in a family of six sons, nor do I understand what it is like to be a member of a family so large. Furthermore, a lot of the author’s experiences deals directly with being a daughter in a Mexican family. I do not share this experience with her either. So, although I understand that the author is going through a struggle due to her involvement in this situation, it’s difficult for me to draw a personal connection to her story.

Even though I wasn’t able to personally connect with the story, the author does manage to prove her point. She describes a series of problems that she had related to her situation as being the only daughter in the family, and when she is finally acknowledge by her father in the end, this brings her happiness. Furthermore, the story is well-written and the situations that are discussed do follow through logically. However, it is difficult to remain interested in what is written purely because of the topic.

I believe that individuals who read this essay that come from a large family or those who grew up in a similar environment as the author will find her story deeply compelling. However, the author used this essay primarily as a means by which she could express herself, and this is apparent. Because the essay was written for her and possibly for a particular audience, it is not interesting or compelling to individuals that do not fall within this targeted category.
