Essay

Admission to a college for tertiary education is a thrilling experience for many scholars. However, the chances for the scholars to complete their studies and graduate from the colleges depend on how they socially integrate into the community at the college. According to the article’s author, Diana was excited when she was admitted to the undergraduate program in graphic arts in New York City. The integration of Diana into the college was challenging because, at the time, she was fretting concerning her performance, lectures were difficult and aloof to contact, and when she confronted the chair of the department, he expressed a lack of interest and at a time was not available for Diana. Diana felt rejected, lonely and lost in students. According to her being unable to graduate from college hinders their future career prospects. This is evident from the statistics in the article that six of ten jobs need post-secondary education. In case mature people below 25 years lack a bachelor’s degree, they may not be employed, and those eighteen years and above with post-secondary education have much better pay. Diana had no opportunity to advance and was being paid $10 hourly due to dropping out of college.       According to Vincent Tinto’s research, whether a student lives on campus pivots on the academic and social integration of the student into the community, they find in college. Transitioning into college makes them leave their homes, friends and families in another community. Many need help socially integrating due to difficulty getting friends, new cultures, and diverse religions. Some who successfully transition have their academic interests aligned with college and value their cultural background. According to ACT, commitment to acquiring a degree, time management, good study, and academic self-confidence predict college graduation. Bright students must keep track of these indicators to pass more classes for graduation. Still, less gifted students keep track despite not scoring good grades and keep the indicators managed to graduation.

Most college students drop out due to a flawed transition process into the college community. Some fail to get friends and thus remain isolated. Also, some get to enter into a community full of diverse cultures. A black American scholar may feel odd out of a college full only of whites. However, students who assimilate successfully have good time management skills, study skills, and academic self-confidence and are committed to graduating from college. To ensure my academic goals are attained, that is, to graduate from college, I will ensure I develop a good time management plan where academic work and extracurricular activities are balanced. Also to increase my social integration in college, I will be an active member of the drama club, an excellent social interaction platform for college students. Proper study and self-confidence in my academics shall be highly maintained. It shall involve identifying personal strengths in academics and weaknesses so that I work on the weaker points and support the stronger ones. Enrolling on the on-college remedial courses to help in building and developing skills for maintaining good lecture notes and only keeping relevant content of the textbooks and lectures from school. Lastly, I will also ensure that I make appropriate friendships at the college and get to know all my coursemates by their names. Accept good friends regardless of their ethnicity, religion and cultural beliefs. Regarding culture, I will maintain my background cultural beliefs.
