William Wegman used to practice his art skills in the art schools in Boston and Illinois. Having fascination about real life and what its elements offer the human mind, it could be understood that Wegman was very much dependent on what he wanted to portray in most of his works. This is what makes his works unique and specifically interesting. Among the most common elements he used in his work were matters that were close to his heart. For instance, it could be realized that one of his most favorite subjects was that of his dog Man Ray. His hilarious photographs of the dog allowed him to express what it was that made the connection that he had with the animal special and extra-ordinary (Art History). His connection with his dog reflected his connection with animated characters which later on allowed him to become more involved in media-art that included creating videos for children that teaches them moral lessons. One of his most prized works was that of his creation featured in Sesame Street.
These works from Wegman mirrors the character that he has inside. It is his quirky character that makes his work lined with the genre of art that serves the need for entertainment among children (Griftin Winton, 2001). Relatively, there are instances when his works are noted for their specific characteristics, especially when it comes to mirroring actual human attitudes that are transcended towards the young viewers, helping them understand a deeper meaning of the program that they are watching (Griffin Winton).
Seeing the value of such works to the younger generation, I have realized how much functional art could be especially when it comes to responding to the different needs of the society. Children, in particular, benefit well from such forms of artistic creations (Mithen,1999). Art has many different roles in the society, and one of its function is that of its capacity to educate the people and the way they perceive the most compelling issues in life and the way humans respond to such issues (Painter, 2002). Accordingly, Wegman’s work proves such matter through creating a new way of utilizing his talent to mandate a sense of better worth of his work through making an entertainment that does not only allow children to see what art is, but are also given the chance to realize the real worth of art as part of their learning process.
Putting one’s heart into one’s work is often noted as the key towards successful management of one’s influence to the public. Through Wagman’s work, he was able to present an effective way of utilizing his own interests into creating a particular form of art that would identify well with his character and his capacity to become more influential to the audience he aims to please and serve at the same time. The young audiences he was able to give particular entertainment and a source of learning to stand as the primary proof that art could indeed be functional and educational at the same time.
