Women Discrimination in Saudi Arabia, Poem Example

Pages: 3

Words: 745

Poem

I am not property.

In some countries gender dictates rights.

It takes sexual inequality to new heights.

A battle that America fought and won centuries ago

In Saudi Arabia women’s rights are still a no.

Covering the heads and faces as if we are invisible

A society for women that has become unlivable.

Contrary to popular belief I am not property.

Giving others the right to dictate my life improperly.

Cook, clean, bear children as a back drop of society.

Opening the door for the male dominated impropriety.

To the mall, to the stores, run an errand what a joke

A father, brother, or husband must accompany us womenfolk

Turning 16 is a pivotal growing point for most

I got my driver’s license the adolescent can boast

However where I’m from a female can turn 86 and still not have one

In Saudi Arabia gender equality has not yet won

I would love to pack my bags for a trip

But in order to do that I need to get a permission slip.

But your 25 years old one may say

It’s a male dominated society and we must get the okay

As a young girl I dreamed about a husband, children, and love

But the family I am awarded is dictated with a shove

Contrary to popular belief I am not property.

Giving others the right to dictate my life improperly.

Arranged marriages to some is a foreign concept

But my father decides who is my best prospect

Giving my hand to a total stranger

Never taking into consideration the potential danger

If I were born a man my life would equate to so much more

I could interact with others without being called a whore

I know no friends only my family

That can cause one to quickly lose their sanity

I dream of a life where I am free to choose

Important life decisions not just my shoes

If I want to go to the store I can grab my purse and go

Free of the male escorts, the ones with the say so

I can drive my own car and take a trip

And do so without someone having ownership

Contrary to popular belief I am not property.

Giving others the right to dictate my life improperly.

One day I will fall in love and marry by choice

Creating my future with my own voice

I can go with the girls on a weekend excursion

And do so without my family’s perversion

An education can award me my future

Where I can rebuild a car or perform a suture

No one telling me which way to live

And my hard work will allow me to thrive

I will see my father and brothers only on the holidays

And it’s no longer their dictation that I have to obey

I can seek advice if I choose to do so

Like many others I probably won’t though

This dream I have seems so foreign to some

But for me this is the life for which I have succumb

Contrary to popular belief I am not property.
Giving others the right to dictate my life improperly.

Saudi Arabia is far behind the times

It’s time for them to see their actions are the true crimes

Gender does not dictate power

And women no longer need to cower

Progression you want – we will give you the right to vote

Wow, we womenfolk now have a reason to gloat

Politicians know that the husbands will tell us which way to go

So the women’s vote will not really show

Many females have wanted to revolt

But they fear the repercussions will be a jolt

Being detained like a lamb on the way to the slaughter

How could anyone accept this life for their daughter

It’s my life I am going to dictate my direction

And no man will be awarded the right of correction

Contrary to popular belief I am not property.

Giving others the right to dictate my life improperly.

Time is precious

Time is precious

don’t waste it!
