Wonder Woman’s Strength Is Her Compassion-What Happened? Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 317

Essay

Wonder woman, America’s longest running heroine that has captured the attention and the hearts of the public for many years. She was created alongside Superman, supposedly the counterpart of the male superhero. However, unlike her male counterparts, Wonder Woman gets lesser attention when it comes to the big screen. The author of the article, Steve St. John, wanted to explore the reasons behind such matter. In his article, he first points out how the male heroes in the American comic industry gets the attention of the public almost immediately.

One of the assumptions of St. John is that of the approach of the characterization of the being of the superhero. Men are more likely to hurt the villains and make it look as much justifiable as possible. The pressure on women being more masculine in their approach to dealing with villains is rather uncanny, even amidst the emergence of feminism. Unlike men superheroes, women are expected to be compassionate, more sensitive, even when dealing with the “bad guys”. Considerably, it could be realized that the natural sensitivity of women might at some point cause a distinct impact on how villains should be treated. Having a motherly-image [because of being a woman], Wonder Woman is expected to do more than just punch or kill a villain, she is expected to justify her actions; something that might be too complicated to include in the overall plot of the story.

Aside from this, Wonder Woman is seen to have a hard rapport with other superheroes especially because she might make the male superheroes rather weak, thus ruining their overall reputation as being masculine and manly at all terms. Considering this matter, Wonder Woman’s position in making it in the big screen is seen to be rather problematic not because of the appeal of a woman superhero to the public, but because of the expectations the society has on an extra ordinary woman.
