Wood Carving, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 361

Essay

Wood carving is among the various pieces of artwork made for aesthetic value, and they serve as souvenirs, artifacts, furniture, and architectural decorations. In our case, the focus on wood art is carving a bear. Having identified what to carve, the second step in carving a bear is making a scale drawing or a plan for the bear to be carved. This is a crucial process since it helps identify various dimensions, which dictates the amount of raw material- wood- needed. Scale drawings are also helpful in cost management since it is costly and tedious to carve a full-sized bear in its original dimension.

The third step is material sourcing for the wood that will perfectly suit the bear in mind. This is met in two ways, i.e., dimensions of the wood and the quality of the wood. The fourth step is transferring the bear’s plan to the wood, followed by the fifth step, which is roughing out or grounding. These two steps are done concurrently to help in shedding off the excess unwanted material from the wood. After these two steps, the sixth, seventh and eighth steps follow closely, which entail modeling, detailing, and finishing. Modeling is conducted to produce the general physique of the bear and then detailing pronounces the bear’s features, which are smoothened out during finishing.

This process of carving a bear is an interesting educational aspect that presents problem-solving processes. For instance, comparing carving a bear with research points out the various procedures and their concurrent match in research. The first step in the research is identifying a need or a problem like carving a bear. After the problem has been identified, objectives are outlined to mark the general outline of the research, just as seen in the scale drawing of a bear. Afterward, the procedure is outlined, and data required for the research at hand is collected for analysis. Upon completion of the data collection process, the research findings are outlined, and a discussion on the nature of the results is given. Afterward, a conclusion is drawn from the data, and a formal report is given in writing just in a similar manner as carving a bear.
