The working stage of a group can be identified by some key behaviors. These are members who interact with each other more directly, the leader uses a variety of therapeutic interventions, a healing capacity develops within the group, and action-oriented behavior is fostered. (Corey M., 2012) When transferring to or identifying the working stage there are some key points to keep in mind. First, that not all groups reach a working stage and second, that work can occur at every stage. The working stage can be difficult to identify since there are no concrete lines dividing each stage. Development increases and slackens regardless of stage and the members function at different levels within the working stage. (O’Driscoll, 0212)Rather than trying to define a working stage, a leader should keep in mind the characteristics of a productive group. Characteristics of a productive group include focusing on the here-and-now, clear and specific member goals, a high sense of emotional bonding present in the group, recognizing and exploring conflict, members speak up about themselves, and there exists a sense of trust and safety within the group environment and among members. (Corey M., 2012)
Leaders and members each have specific functions in the working stage of a group. For leaders, these functions should include the continued modeling of appropriate behavior and the promotion of cohesion within the group. Leaders should encourage members to deeper self-exploration, translating insight into action, and practicing newly learned skills during daily life. Remembering not to work with just the obvious emotions is important for group leaders. (Corey M., 2012) Members have a responsibility to come to group ready to discuss issues, give and receive feedback, and practice newly learned skills in their daily lives, then share the results with the group. Members should challenge and support each other and actively engage in self-confrontation. If a group member becomes too comfortable, they are not working as they should. (Smith, 2008)
