Decreasing support from communities and schools as well as the increasing rate of poverty and discrimination limits urban youth’s prospects to have influence over the programs and policies that shape their lives. Rising public disengagement, racial, ethnic and social inequalities create distrust in possibility of becoming an important asset of society and limits personal and social legitimacy. Media sources tend to create public awareness about the negative aspects of urban setting but it’s crucial to introduce the ways of overcoming the problems, like showing existing or developing programs. Media education is not aimed to show the correct answers but by consuming the images with the critical and active mind, being able to ask the correct questions.
NYC Department of Education highlights a number of programs that are aimed to provide behavioral and educational support to youth groups. Within the schools and urban setting it’s vital to create a wide public awareness of the existing tools. Through printed, TV, radio and online sources, mass media should disseminate information and material of social and cultural benefits to youth. Through interviews and success stories TV media should highlight possibilities of pursuing existing programs. Schools should have numerous print outs and booklets, interactive websites and radio broadcasting of programs that are created to make a difference in personal education and bring about a positive change. Media coverage is one of the most important means of bringing the information to youth and helping educate them into country’s bright future.

Globalization of media is among key factors nowadays that defines and shapes children. Young people have access to TV, radio stations, internet and video games, newspapers and books much more than before. However, some might be limited to one or another media source which means that campaign developers must carefully evaluate and plan in order to target as much young audience as they can. Keeping in mind demographics of the area, ethnical and cultural background and habits of viewers will ease the message to be delivered.
Television is the dominant medium for youth. Children at times are keener on watching TV than reading a newspaper or magazine. TV prevalence in children’s life on a daily basis makes it one of the biggest information sources about the world. It effectively communicates necessary content. Radio being second most popular activity among youth is mainly used for music entertainment. However, many social campaigns have successfully managed to reach their audience. Internet became a very powerful tool to correspond the messages to youth by means of informational campaigns on websites or in social games. Young people however favor using computers for entertainment purposes rather than reading or education. Printed media is also available for children. In magazines or books, young kids can receive necessary information. In high schools professors organize face to face meetings with people who make a difference in the community or have a success story to share with children.
At times kids express disinterest in social life and this is one of the so-called conditions of being young. Therefore, it is essential to combine media sources in order to reach as much target audience as possible. Children’s racial, ethnic backgrounds can limit access to media as well and it plays a great role in their uprising.
