Current Local Sewer Issue, CSO, SSO, Etc

Currently, the United State of America is one of the richest countries in the world. However, it’s ironic when ones look at sewage collection system at Tampa. Some of the pipes are as much as 200 years old, and they usually carry enough raw sewage to fill up the Great Lakes. Due to this, a lot of pipes are broken or leaking, the sewerage system has also overloaded, and sometime treatment is a bypassed. The worse effect on this situation in Tampa is raw sewage backs up into people’s home: this raw sewage accompanied with a disquieting frequency, and it is regularly permitted to stream into bodies of water, which are the sources of drinking water. (Carols, S. 2000)

Hypothetically, this raw sewage that is been accompanied with infectious bacteria, parasites, viruses and toxic chemicals, gets indulgenced in wastewater treatment plants. Though, this raw sewerage is been treated, in real sense, due to insufficient pipes, sometimes fewer pipes that are there ought to release untreated or only few treated while others aren’t. It’s now 33 years of collection, but some pipes which are been even used today are still over 200 years old. (Schumpeter, B. 2002)

According to the research conducted by health experts, it shows that Tampa environment is totally been polluted and also, the society is at high risk of disease outbreak. Moreover, each an every day the crisis at Tampa tends to become worse due population growth which adds more pressure on sewage collection, and on other hand, the treatment system is poor. Also, urban sprawl creates additional land area impermeable to storm water, supplementary aggravating insufficiencies and Achilles’ heel in the compilation and system during wet weather (Thomas, H 2004). Moreover, the climate change has raised the frequencies and relentlessness of tempests in several areas. Also, increased population has even caused the number of exposed people to untreated sewage to rise.

The primary obstacle isn’t the lack of engineering to fix the predicament of sewer overflows, enough information, and pouring billions of dollars to develop the capacity and integrity of the wastewater scheme infrastructure.

Current Hot Issue Involving the Local Water Management Agencies

Tampa Bay Water, Counties, Cities, Etc

According to McCain, J. & Aston, B (2008) the local water management agencies are in a hard time of addressing the estuarine environmental problems. The raw sewage has totally destructed the cities environment and it’s an obligation for them to plan, manage, brings innovative initiatives and tries to outreach public and education. High population has made it difficult for management agencies, to capture the situation. Also, the management agencies are looking forward on how to add some pipes and also replace the old ones which are extreme poor. In whatever means, the local water management agencies have to protect the environment as a critical matter.

Moreover, the alteration of natural flow regimes is another critical issues that the local water management agencies is been involved with. They have to ensure the water quality standards are attained. Due to sewerage overflow, the water sources have contaminated with raw sewage, this has made it difficult for cities dwellers to get fresh water. Also, the habitat loss and degradation is another issue which aims at improving water sources.

Moreover, the toxic chemicals are harmful to human being, wildlife and aquatic life. The management agencies have to ensure the safety of water which is free from toxic chemicals.

Nevertheless, there is a decline in fish and wildlife populations; the raw sewerage contaminating with water puts the fish into hot water, and environment population leads to declines in wildlife. The local water management agencies have to ensure the safety of fish and other animals living in water and the wildlife by addressing the issues effectively. Also there are other discharged substances which are harmful to environment, such oil into water system.

Other types of illicit discharges include:

  • Grass clippings
  • Fertilizers
  • Pesticides
  • Herbicides
  • Detergents

For example, when pouring oil into a water container, water is heavier than any liquid, this means that oil will float on top of water and it will block the air not to enter inside the water. The same case applies when oils are exposed to sea, lakes, or any other water catchments areas where there are animals which depend or lives in the water. They usually breaths inside the water and if the water doesn’t have air, due to oil, they will definitely dies. Also, fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and detergents are toxic chemicals, if they are exploited excess, they will start flowing into streams, livers, lakes and eventually to the seas. This will again cause more danger to the animals living in water. Also, human being and other animals which rely on water will be affected because not all human being and animals normally takes treated water or boiled water. This will leads to diseases such as chlorella etc. (Williams, J 2007)

Moreover, the management has to ensure that all industries don’t pour their waste into water catchments. They also have to make sure that, all vehicles are in good conditions, there are no linkages or excess smoke which spoil environment.

Also, it necessity for managing agencies to make sure all the cities and street are swept. This will assist in the reduction of waste which eventually pollutes the environment and also, entering into waterways. They have to ensure that the all streets and business districts are swept daily, from Monday to Friday. Sanitation is the conclusion of these crises in Tampa, and that’s why the management should provide the litterbins allover the Tampa and put strictly measures, so that people makes use it.

Planting of trees is another thing which the management agencies have to do. We breathe in oxygen (O2) and we breathe out carbon dioxide (CO). The trees or plants are the ones which give out oxygen. However, the human being population has increased and the trees have decreased due to man activities. We need to plant more indigenous trees which will restore our initial environment and brings more rains water, which is clean water and can be used for domestic purpose.
