Essay

A professional development refers to a range of learning activities that assist healthcare professional in maintaining and developing throughout their career. The purpose of professional development is that it enable professional to retain their capacity to practice legally and effectively within their scope of practice. The importance of professional in the health sector to plan their career development cannot be overstated. In fact, every health care professional requires an opportunity to grow and develop professionally. According to Vihos, and the University of Alberta (2015), one of the best modes to achieve such growth is through the professional development assignment program. Therefore, it is important for healthcare administrators to promote an environment in which the healthcare professional will be encouraged and motivated to develop and grow professionally. This paper highlights items that I found to be interesting, as well as those I think, were least interesting. The paper also attempts to describe how these items apply to a professional development assignment. Additionally the paper describes how this item applies to professional to formulating a professional development plan.

The second item that interested me is in module three. Module three focuses on three critical concerns in a nursing profession such as nursing education and accreditation of nursing programs as well as regulation issues.  Education is a key part of nursing professional. Each professional in healthcare needs to understand the process of professional education as well as quality issues. Nurses also should be aware of the current affairs and trends in their professional The topic of the issue of nursing education enable the nurse to be aware of what is expected of when they join the professional; thus they can practice legally. This topic highlights the fact that nurse in the 21st century faces many new challenges including increased population and the percentage of elderly patients, increasing healthcare costs as well as the need to stay current amid the rapid changes in medical knowledge and technology.  The implication of this is that, nowadays, employers seek nurses who possess skills that are aligned with the current needs.  Additionally, the module discusses the regulation issues including certification of the health care professional.  According to Taylor (2013), having an understanding of the code of standard that one is expected meet is important to the development of nurses professional. Therefore, the topic about regulations including certification enables the nurse to grips their responsibility as nurses. Such responsibilities include making patient care their first concern; always provide high standards practice and care all the time. In addition, that failure to meet these codes of conduct may lead to deregistering of a nurse.  Thus, this applies to the formulation of the development assignment because, as a result, healthcare professionals are in a good position to operate safely, effectively and legally.

The second item that is interesting is the legal and ethical issue in health care.  When dealing with healthcare, the issue of ethics is very common. Almost every decision that a nurse is required to make has ethical implications. Thus, a professional cannot avoid the ethical or legal issue in their practice. They need to understand clearly the ethics in their professional to practice legally. The implication of practice illegally or unethically affects not only the provider but also the patient and their families and hospital administrators.

There are some of the items that were not interesting, such item includes module one and module four.  One important thing to note is that still these items are important in professional development. Module four focus on health policy and the political process.  Health policy and economics focus as on organization, the method of payment and process of improving the quality of health care Health policy affects all aspect of health care delivery. It affects things such as the manner in which the care is delivered, the type of service provided as well as who provide and receive the care.  Having an understanding of the health policy and economics, enable the professional to use economic concepts when talking and thinking about health care system.  It helps the health care professional to understand the importance of health to humans, the size of the health sector and the limited resource available to provide health. There is a need for more experts in the division of economics in health care (Smith, 2007).

Furthermore, I found module two to be less interesting. The module focuses on the professional nursing. However, in this module I found the topic of the history of nursing to be very interesting.  Developing an understanding of the history of nursing allows a nurse to understand the current problem such as pay, regulation, autonomy fully.  A review of the history of nursing reveals patterns of recurrent issues that healthcare professional has been required to confront overtime.  It is clear that each decade has brought insight into ways the profession can better meet challenges in the healthcare. I believe that it is hard for present day nurses to address such issue without the foundation of historical knowledge. Thus, I believe that examine the history of nursing professional allow nurses to appreciate their role in health care system. Thus, nurse of future must continue to monitor changes in technology, advances in scientific knowledge and changes in society and health care delivery system (Anderson, 2001).

It is conclusive that professional development is crucial in healthcare sector because it enable a health care professional to retain their capacity to practice safely and legally within their scope of practice. Having an understanding of topics such as the legal and ethical issue in health care, health policy, and political process; as nursing education and accreditation of nursing programs as well as regulation issues is very important. One of the best modes to achieve such growth is through the professional development assignment program. Therefore, it is important for healthcare administrators to promote an environment in which the healthcare professional will be motivated and encouraged to develop and grow professionally. Failing to develop professionally has implication not only to the care providers but also to the patients and their families and the hospital administrators.
