Essay

The first thing I worked on for this was the open ended questions approach. One of the reasons that 1984 is still a popular book and an important book is that readers can look at what happens in the book and compare those things to the real world. So to work on this I thought of some open ended questions and I talked with a few people about them. I really only had two open ended questions:

  1. How is the world in 1984 the same as the real world of today?
  2. How is the world in 1984 different from the real world today?

When I thought about how to answer these questions I wrote down the answers, and those were my ideas for the paper. The main answer to question 1 was that the Telescreen in the book was like the Internet in real life. The main answer to question 2 was the government does not force people to use the Internet, but they can still spy on people just like the Big Brother government in 1984.

It was an important part of doing this project to make an outline. Really I made more than one outline because I was not happy with the first one. I used the answers from Workout 1 to make a list of ideas I thought I should write about. Then I started making an outline by putting those ideas in order and trying to make introduction to them. After I liked the order of the ideas I wrote down ideas for the introduction and conclusion. The time on the outline was the harder part of this project. Then I just had to try to fix mistakes and use better words and rewrite several times until I was happy with the paper.
