Chapters 20-21:  In the final chapters of Wuthering Heights (Chapters 20-26) the story unfolds to its tragic ending Bronte’s novel illustrates an uncaring world of innocent children who are not loved by society that they enter into. Heathcliff demonstrates the dark side of his character and how his childhood, being an orphan, transcends into his adult life. Hindley demonstrates similar qualities having been rejected by his parents during childhood. Both find it difficult to express their true inner feelings and the concept of trespass is compared to how both characters must trespass into other people’s lives in order to share and express feelings.

Chapters 22-23: Bronte continues the theme of abandoned children looking at the plight of Cathy Linton and the fact that she will not inherit her father’s estate.  Edgar is a hard cold character and has no real concern for the welfare of his daughter. Cathy Linton is faced with a woman’s struggle and stereotype of being weak and unable to carry on the affairs of the Estate,

Chapters 24 -25:  Chapter 24 focuses upon contrasts between different personalities, in particular Linton and Cathy. Edgar moving from a peaceful character to one of hatred and fury. It demonstrates how easy it is to move between different personas Edgar demonstrates the other side of his character and the Jekyll and Hyde effect. He can move quickly from a peaceful character to one of fury and rage. He is also deceitful and manipulative trying to compromise his daughter into a position of marriage merely to look after property inheritance issues.

Chapter 26: Focuses upon the cruelty portrayed by Heathcliff to his son. Linton is seen as a despicable character that hates everyone and has not achieved any good in his life. Linton is contrasted to Heathcliff and it illustrates that there are even darker more sinister characters in the novel than Heathcliff.  Linton is revealed as being a despicable character that everyone has learned to hate.  “His large blue eyes wandered timidly over her; the hollowness round them, transforming to haggard wildness, the languid expression they once possessed.” (Bronte)
