Chapter 27-28: Cathy shows her compassion for her dying father. Linton demonstrates his ill behaviour to Cathy and again shows his dark side. Heathcliff demonstrates both his anger and rage by yelling at his son. His son becomes terrified of him and would do anything to avoid punishment. Cathy on the other hand demonstrates kindness and compassion. Linton hoped that his Father would die “I’m glad for I shall be Master of the Grange after him” (Bronte). Linton became cruel to Cathy, locking her in the house and demonstrated a character more despicable than Heathcliff.
Chapter 29 – 30: Heathcliff scolds Cathy but leaves the boy alone, as he is terrified of him. Cathy leaves the Grange and Linton seeks revenge on her. Heathcliff descents into a macabre state opening Catherine’s coffin so he could be beside her. Heathcliff describes how Catherine haunts him and he feels her presence everywhere. Heathcliff loses his son and takes his grief out on Cathy “ you have left me so long to struggle against death alone, that I feel I see only death” (Bronte). Zillah continues to treat Cathy with disdain.
Chapter 31-32: Cathy shows her contempt for Hareton because he reads her books. Hareton reacts badly to Cathy’s insults and throws her books on the fire, an act he later regrets. Heathcliff and Lockwood demonstrate their complete distrust of one another.
Chapter 33-34: Anger erupts as Cathy teases Heathcliff by making Hareton laugh at him. Hareton demonstrates his care and affection for Cathy but she continues to use him. Heathcliff has now become a tormented bitter figure despising both Cathy and Hareton for the resembleence of his love to Catherine Earnshaw. Heathcliff reaches the depths of despair and verges on madness. He wanders the moors alone at night and becomes obsessed with death. Heathcliff eventually dies and is buried next to Catherine Earnshaw. The villages say Heathcliff and Catherine’s ghosts can be seen wandering across the moors.
Ultimately Hareton and Catherine merge the best qualities of their parents, embodying the better virtues of Wuthering Heights and the kindness of Thrushcross Grange. The bonding of Hareton and Catherine gives rise to a new dawn of hope for the future of Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange.
