Yoga and the Risk of Injury, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 319

Essay

Many studies have been conducted about the potential beneficial effects of yoga. Since the 1970s the World Health Organization has promoted yoga exercises for staying in shape and even combating pain and depression (Mishra, Singh, Bunch & Zhang, 2012). A comprehensive review of available literature demonstrates that yoga can be helpful for patients dealing with some neurological disorders such as epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, and even Alzheimer’s disease, though this review does also point out some of the deficiencies in the various studies (Mishra, et al). There are other concerns for individuals who are considering engaging in yoga practices, especially for older patients who are experiencing low bone density related osteopenia and osteoporosis. A 2013 study of patients with osteponeia demonstrated that the subjects experienced pain and vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) after engaging in spinal flexion exercises (SFEs) associated with yoga (Sinaki, 2013).

While this study certainly raises some concerns about individuals with bone density issues engaging in yoga, it should be noted that the study only focused on three subjects. Although all three subjects experienced problems after engaging in SFEs, the small number of subjects is too limited to make any larger determinations about a definitive connection between SFEs, bone density, and VCFs. Exercise is also considered to be beneficial to individuals with bone density issues, so it may just be that such individuals can benefit from yoga as long as they are very careful about choosing positions and stretches that are not too strenuous. The 2013 study does highlight that there is a possible concern about a negative connection between yoga and low bone density, but it also demonstrates that more research is needed to make any definitive determinations.
