Yoga is designed to move different sections of the body; mostly one at the same time, focusing on breathing. It helps people build long, lean muscles through holding the weight of the body. There are specific moves for flexibility; abs, arms, legs and full joint complexes. It also supports spinal reflexes and muscles. However, some of the moves, for example Downward Facing Dog are created to stretch the back muscles, the ones on the back of the legs and strengthen the arms at the same time. Plank pose is suitable for strengthening the legs and arms, as well as the core muscles.

There are different types of yoga today; some are aerobic, others anaerobic.  Vinyasa Yoga is based on moves and transitioning from one posture to another; therefore, it is the most aerobic version. Power Yoga is another version with aerobic elements. However, every single type of yoga has an anaerobic element; replenishing energy stores through breathing.

Yoga poses (asanas) can be isometric or isotonic. However, the main moves are predominantly isometric, as it is required to hold the poses and contract muscles while not moving. However, all moves can be turned into an isotonic exercise through transitioning from one posture to another. For example, the isometric plank pose can be turned into an isotonic pose when pushing up into a scorpion or downward facing dog pose using the arm muscles.

There are some specific yoga poses created for sacroiliac pain, provided that it is caused by joint pressure and there is no physical injury involved. Still, it is important to get checked out by the doctor before starting yoga and practicing back bend poses. It is also recommended to hold the pose at the position where the person feels a tension and breathe into the pose without going further.

The long term benefits of yoga can be concluded as core strength, long lean muscles supporting the body, more balanced breathing and stress reduction. It promotes strength, flexibility and prevents back pain long term.
